In the world of essential oils and natural healing, nothing is more synonymous with winter than Thieves®; for people and horses alike.

Young Living’s Thieves® essential oil was created from research based on legends about a group of 15th century thieves who rubbed oils and aromatics on themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. When apprehended, the thieves were forced to tell what their secret was and disclosed the formula of the herbs, spices, and oils they used to protect themselves in exchange for more lenient punishments.

Thieves is the amazing blend of highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious essential oils including:

  • Clove
  • Lemon
  • Cinnamon Bark
  • Eucalyptus Radiata
  • Rosemary

There are so many conditions and symptoms that benefit from Thieves, but here are just a few common equine situations we run across during this time of year.

ABSCESS

  • Apply Thieves essential oil, between 3-6 drops (always best to start with less then add as needed) directly/neat (undiluted) to the abscess head, up to twice a day
  • Hot pack the abscess with a very warm, damp wash cloth to help bring the abscess to a “head” or to drain
  •  Once the “head” has opened and drainage is occurring, flush the wound with diluted Thieves® Household Cleaner

*  ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION: Utilize Raindrop Technique to aid in increasing the immune system and eliminating the infection. To view a tutorial video on Raindrop Technique click HERE.

HOOF ABSCESS

  •  Soak hoof in a 1:3 ratio of Thieves Household Cleaner to warm water to help draw out of abscess then follow with the above protocol
  • Apply Thieves directly/neat to the abscess area or “head” three or more times a day

*  ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION: Utilize Raindrop Technique to aid in increasing the immune system and eliminating the infection. To view a tutorial video on Raindrop Technique click HERE.

COLD & FLU

  •   Diffuse Thieves in the barn and near the stall. This will also aid in maintaining or increasing the other animal’s, and human’s, immune systems
  •  Apply 3-6 drops of Thieves directly to the inside of the lip or cheek. If this is difficult, the add 4-8 drops to about 2-3 tablespoons of organic carrier oil, such as olive oil, to a syringe (without needle) and administer orally

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION: Utilize Raindrop Technique to aid in increasing the immune system and eliminating the infection. To view a tutorial video on Raindrop Technique click HERE.

LACERATIONS

  •  Mix Thieves, Melrose and Helichrysum essential oils into Animal Scents Ointment, or organic carrier oil, (approximately 5 drops of each into 1 tablespoon) and fill laceration with the ointment mixture. Repeat as needed, generally one-two times a day
  • You may also add these additional oils to the Thieves spray

RAIN ROT

  • Bath with Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Dilute Thieves essential oil with an organic carrier oil or Animal Scents Ointment and apply several times a day, or as needed
  •  Water Misting: this can be helpful to apply oils to a broad area. Place 10-20 drops of any selected oil into 4 ounces (120ml) of distilled water and mist the area of concern

* Other oil options: Purification, Melrose, Melaleuca Alternifolia (tea tree), Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemon

RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS

  • Diffuse and apply topically with any single or combination of following oils multiple times a day:
  • Thieves, R.C., Raven, Breathe Again roll-on, Eucalyptus Blue, Eucalyptus Globulus, Oregano, Peppermint, Ravintsara

*   ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION: Utilize Raindrop Technique to aid in increasing the immune system and eliminating the infection. To view a tutorial video on Raindrop Technique click HERE.

I certainly hope you found this helpful! For those of you in the cold, colder, & coldest parts of the country or world, stay warm! For the lucky ones in the more favorable conditions…I am a very nice house guest. xo-Melanie
